I caught up with ex Millwall, Brentford and Southend centre back Mark Phillips who is currently playing for AFC Wimbledon, just to ask him a couple of questions about his career and what his plans are for the future!

Much I'm sure like many of you, have always wondered what it would be like to play in front of thousands of fans, all cheering you on, so I decided to ask Mark exactly that; how does it feel? His passion for the game immediately came flooding in as soon as I heard his response:

Mark told me, “I don’t think you can beat the buzz of playing in front of thousands of fans cheering so loud that you can’t even heard your own team mates!” The former Southend player of the year then went on to add, “Running out of the tunnel to that noise is like a boyhood dream! It’s what you look forward to before each game. The buzz you get from the fans after doing something well such as a good tackle or pass really gets behind you, however nothing beats the feeling you get after scoring a goal. It’s what football’s all about – amazing!”

The man currently on a months loan at Aldershot Town has played at so many amazing stadiums across the country, but I wanted to know which one has been his favourite. He explained to me, “I’ve played at some of the best stadiums across England, including Wembley which was a great experience, however for me just because of the atmosphere and passion I’d say the New Den for the Millwall vs West Ham derbies. They were something special.” Just as I thought.

Understandably green with envy, I quickly moved on to the next part of our interview, which was to ask Phillips to name his best XI of all of his former teammates. Here were the results:

I decided to finish up our chat by asking Mark about his plans for the future after hearing of his completion of his coaching courses.

“I love passing on my knowledge and experience to the younger generation of players, so I’ve started my own football academy. It has gone really well so far and we pride ourselves on our professional standards of coaching. This coming half term on Wednesday 29th October we have our trial day over in Bromley for our weekly elite training sessions that will be commencing soon. From these sessions we plan to form teams, and then through my contacts play against professional clubs. This’ll give our young players the experience that will help develop them as players.”

I’ll be there to shoot some video coverage/interviews at the event so stay tuned for that, and also of course be sure to tell all your friends about it by passing on the flyer below. Also, if you have any enquiries about the academy, contact them on 07947644470, or alternatively email
